Jessica Lu, LCSW, CBE, Birth Doula
I am a DONA-trained birth doula, childbirth educator, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist who specializes in trauma. I have been a practicing doula and psychotherapist in New York City since 2013, and in 2017 I relocated to Orange County, California to continue my practice.
In 2009 I began reading about the childbirth industry in America. I found the stories so interesting that I decided to complete my undergraduate research thesis on the American experience of childbirth. It astounded me how much I did not know about pregnancy, labor, and delivery. I soon learned I was not alone.
When I spoke to women about childbirth, I heard stories of horror, pain, risk, surgery, confusion, and even disgust. So many women viewed childbirth as a medical or hospital experience, not a womanly experience. None of it sat right with me, and I realized I wanted to be a part of a different kind of birth story. I wanted women to feel well informed, peaceful, confident, and powerful about birth.
I created Bird &Bee Birth Services because I believe it is possible to birth without fear. I believe childbirth is an experience in which women should be empowered to use their intuition and strength as they bring new life into the world. I am extremely passionate about my role as a doula, educator, and as the owner of Bird & Bee. I will ensure you are provided with unwavering physical and emotional support, education, and the tools you need to have your BEST birth.
I have additional training in rebozo use, acupressure, Spinning Babies, and essential oils use. I trained as a Midwifery Assistant at The Farm Midwifery Center in Summertown, Tennessee. I am a trauma therapist and specialize in working with survivors of childhood sexual abuse, trauma, domestic violence, and sexual assault. I have additional training from the Seleni Institute for Maternal Mental Health in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders/postpartum depression as well as perinatal loss. I provide miscarriage support and I conduct bereavement counseling for families.
Jessica received her B.A. in Women and Gender Studies at Hunter College and her M.S.W. at The Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College in New York City
